We have met before, a few years ago, when her third novel Americanah was published, a book that examines what it is to be a Nigerian woman living in the US, and that went on to win a National Book Critics’ Circle award. ![]() ![]() ![]() How do you intend to keep the love of people like me?”Īdichie and I are in a coffee shop near her home in the Baltimore suburbs. But since you started this whole feminism thing, and since you started to talk about this gay thing, I’m just not sure about you any more. “I used to love you,” she recalls him saying. It’s an ambivalence with which many Nigerians regard her, too last year, the workshop ended in a question-and-answer session, during which a young man rose to ask the famous novelist a question. When Adichie is in Nigeria, where her parents and extended family still live, she has a house in the vast city she regards with the complicated love and condescension of the part-time expat. For much of the year, Adichie lives in a town 30 minutes west of Baltimore, where her Nigerian-American husband works as a medic and the 39-year-old writes in the quiet of a suburban home. ![]() Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was in Lagos last summer, teaching a writing workshop as part of an annual schedule that sees her time divided between Nigeria and the US. ![]()

It isn’t nearly as shameless as the screen-craving Hunger Games atrocities, but in places it looks like a bad college essay written the night before it’s due, trying to disguise its tardiness by flaunting disproportionately big (and sometimes misused) vocabulary in the middle of grade school level sentences. I had perhaps too great hopes for the third book, The Toll. Thunderhead, the second book (not reviewed on the Forum), raised the bar even higher. As is, the twist makes the book feel messy and disjointed. ![]() If more suspense and tension were built up in the first act, the transition could’ve at least been powerful. Around page 150, the book takes a really dark turn with barely any buildup. In terms of the first complaint: the book takes too long being a sappy romance without a hint of darkness. My issues with the execution of this utterly tragic awful book can be summed up in two points: 1) this book has a tone problem, and 2) it’s way too short and not nuanced or developed enough. Right? Unless it’s a book about queer people, and then it always seems to end in someone dying or being violently outed. When a book starts out as a somewhat-romcom with no substance, it does not end in a tragic ending. I’m going to try to explain this as best I can. But the more I think about this book and all it entails, the more confident I become that this is something a little worse – it is one of those lgbtq books that is not written for queer teens, but for those looking for a little Suffer Porn. When I first read A Very, Very Bad Thing, I thought I should have enjoyed it. ![]() |
